Interview Questions
Thank you for taking the time to meet with me and to help me on this assignment. I am currently a PhD candidate in the Higher, Adult and Lifelong Education program at Michigan State University. The purpose of this interview is to collect data that can help me describe the impact interracial interaction has on students’ perceptions and attitudes about other racial groups. The data collected from this interview will be used in my dissertation. I have asked you to help me with this project because I believe your experiences will help me accurately assess the impact of interracial contact.
Questions
1. Can you please describe in detail the high school you attended?
2. What was the diversity breakdown of your high school?
3. Do you have a close friend (someone with whom you speak or hang out with 2-3 times a week) who is a different race than you? Can you please describe them to me in detail?
4. Why did you decide to participate in the MBP Tutorial Program?
5. Can you provide a brief description of the students in your tutorial session?
6. What have you learned about the students in your tutorial session?
7. Do you associate with any of students in your tutorial session? If yes, who are they and what types of activities do you engage in? If no, who do you associate with and what type of activities do you engage in?
8. How has your thinking concerning individuals from different racial groups changed since participating in the MBP Tutorial Program?
9. How comfortable are you when interacting with individuals from a different racial background? Do you believe you are more or less comfortable since participating in the tutorial program? How so?
10. The first time you interacted with someone from a race different then yours, how did you feel?
11. Have you ever been in a group where you were the minority? If so, how did you feel?
12. How were stereotypes that you may have held about other racial groups impacted by your participation in the MBP Tutorial Program?
13. Do you feel that interacting with peers from different racial groups has benefited you in any way? If yes, how? If no, please explain why you feel this way.
14. Do you feel more comfortable around other racial groups having participated in the MBP Tutorial Program? If yes, how so? I no, please explain why you believe this to be the case.
